Scott Bessent - U.S. Treasury Secretary
"It [sanctions] worked because in December, their economy collapsed. We saw a major bank go under. The central bank has started to print money. There is a dollar shortage. They are not able to get imports, and this is why the people took to the streets," he said.

He added, "This is economic statecraft. No shots fired. Things are moving in a very positive way here."

"Use economic tools. There are ways to cripple their economy. Just weaken their economy... because they have supporters in rural areas... We need to make them feel pain too."

US blocked life-saving drugs for Iranian patients

US blocked life-saving drugs for Iranian patients

August 20, 2026

Amin Afshar, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Iranian Hemophilia Society, said in an interview: The World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH), after months of negotiations and coordination with the Iranian Red Crescent Society, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and other relevant bodies, managed to prepare a shipment of essential medications for von Willebrand patients to be sent to Iran. However, the United States government did not issue the necessary permit for the transfer of this humanitarian aid. This incident clearly demonstrates that, contrary to repeated claims by U.S. officials that 'medicine is not subject to sanctions,' even donated medicines and purely humanitarian aid are not exempt from the restrictions imposed by sanctions. Ultimately, it is the patients who pay the price of these decisions with their lives and health.

Sanctions Block Life-Saving Medicine for Iranian Hemophilia Patients

World Federation of Hemophilia donated the drugs for free, but the shipment never reached its destination

According to a report published by Pressenza, based on an interview with Amin Afshar, head of Iran's Hemophilia Society, a donated shipment of medicine by the World Federation of Hemophilia never reached Iran due to sanctions-related obstacles and failure to obtain administrative permits. The crisis has put over 4,000 patients, especially women and children suffering from Factor XIII deficiency and severe Von Willebrand disease, at serious risk.

The interview reveals that in recent months, several patients have died and many others have suffered irreversible brain and joint damage. For hemophilia patients, delayed access to medication means uncontrolled bleeding, postponed surgeries, and in some cases, death. Patients have been forced to rely on outdated, unpurified blood products like cryoprecipitate, treatments that the World Health Assembly has deemed "medically undesirable" for hemophilia patients.

Afshar emphasized that the problem is not limited to the sale of medicines, but involves a complete chain of obstacles: from money transfers and banking cooperation to shipping insurance, export permits, and pharmaceutical companies' fear of US secondary sanctions. Referring to the failed donation by the World Federation of Hemophilia, he stated: "If even donated medicines cannot reach patients, it is difficult to maintain that medicines are practically exempt from the effects of sanctions."

Families of patients live in constant fear and despair. A three-year-old child in Khash has died due to lack of medicine, and four other children are currently hospitalized across the country. Afshar concluded by urging international policymakers to separate healthcare from political conflicts, saying: "No child should die because of sanctions, simply because a box of medicine does not reach them."
